We have been homeschooling for more than 10 years now. While my husband has Chinese ancestry, our kids do not take Chinese language lessons because I cannot really tutor them. We could have hired a tutor, but the problem was that neither of them wanted to learn. When she was younger, our eldest, Dindin, once said, “Hihi, I sound funny.” She was only 5 years old then. In our home, we encourage but don’t really force anything because we feel it’s going to be useless anyway.
Now that they’re 16 and 12, both of them seem to have developed an interest in learning Mandarin. Dindin has even downloaded an app and practices words from time to time. But they would still need a Chinese tutor who can guide them on proper pronunciation, as a wrong accent on a certain syllable could already mean an entirely different thing.
Online Mandarin Language Classes: Hans Language Center
We discovered the Hans Language Center. The physical school is based in Manila, where they hold face-to-face classes and one-on-one tutorials. But since we live in the province, we were happy to learn that they can handle online classes.

And so we took advantage of their FREE TRIAL. The setup was two students to one teacher, who is a Chinese national named Teacher Lily, but who is already fluent in English.
The kids like her! They truly enjoyed the class, participating and engaging with the teacher. Also, Teacher Lily is very encouraging, and the girls were totally into the 1-hour lessons. Online is the best way for those who do not reside near their school, and also it means that classes are available throughout the country where there is stable internet connection.

About the Hans Language Center
Aside from Mandarin, the school also offers Singapore Math, which our youngest Shane, also tried. I shadowed their group class and it was very engaging. Despite her age and level, the school assessed that Shane should go through with the lower-level class just to expose her to the Singapore Math system.
It was a very engaging class. The teacher would explain, the kids answered verbally, and they also had activities where they could answer through their gadgets. I love how Singapore Math works! It helps children understand difficult Math concepts by explaining them in a systematic and easy way. It sorts of “rewires” how children view Mathematical equations.

What Hans Language Center Offers
The school offers the following courses:
- Online Singapore Math (Small group classes: 4-8 students/class
- Online Mandarin Courses (1-on-1 and 1-on-2 sessions)
For online courses, students have to download an app that they access for their classes. It is also where they can monitor their attendance and leave a rating for their teachers.
About Their Students
Many of Mega Mind’s students take both Singapore Math and Mandarin classes. They are a diverse set, too. Get to know more about them.
Singapore Math Program
Majority of their Singapore Math students are currently enrolled in Grades 1 to 6 and are based in the Philippines. They often face challenges in calculation, Geometry, and Algebra, so their parents felt that they needed an after-school program that can help them navigate Math and give them efficient tools to solve problems on their own. The school also teaches kids to develop effective learning habits.
Many of the students aim to study at IB/AP levels or pursue education abroad and their parents are highly supportive and willing to invest in their children’s academic growth.
Online Mandarin Language Course
More and more people are recognizing the value of speaking another language apart from English. And it seems the next choice for Filipinos and even other nationalities is Mandarin Chinese. Even Filipino-Chinese who predominantly speak Hokkien are now getting out of their comfort zone to master Mandarin.
That is the reason why students at Hans Mega Mind Language Center range widely in age. They are aged 5 to 30 years old. Not only are they interested in learning the Chinese language, but they want to understand and appreciate the traditional culture.
Others have more specific goals, such as preparing for standardized exams like HSK or YCT. Some are working toward scholarships, study-abroad programs, or planning to study in China. Meanwhile, the graduating students or young professionals are seeking to enhance career opportunities with Chinese companies in the Philippines or even abroad. Yes, being able to converse in Chinese is definitely a plus on an applicant’s resume when job hunting.
