Most homes nowadays are equipped with a refrigerator, even just a small one, in order to keep the food that we buy stay fresh longer. But are we making the most use of our refrigerator to get our money’s worth for the purchase and also for our electric bills? Here are some ways to keep the fridge clean and organized and working efficiently throughout the year.
Keep the Fridge Clean and Organized
A refrigerator in every home is more a need nowadays than just mere luxury. Gone were the days when we just have the fridge because we like cold water or we can make iced candy or popsicles.
With the pandemic, we need to stock up on food and ingredients so that we don’t have to keep going to the market or grocery. That way, we stay at home more and lessen our exposure to other people and keep ourselves safe from Covid-19. This is already our new normal and the sooner we accept it, the safer we and our families are going to be.
However, not many owners of refrigerators know how to keep the fridge clean and organized. It is not just about being OC but doing so will keep this giant home appliance working properly and efficiently. This means that it keeps our food and drinks cold and fresh with the least use of electricity.
Things You Will Need
These are some things that you will need in order to keep the fridge clean and organized. Many homemakers just buy a refrigerator but they do not use these. However, these will save you a lot of time and effort in using your refrigerator, especially if you have a big one.
A Lazy Susan.
A lazy Susan, if you don’t know, is that round thing that turns around and sort of “delivers” food around the table. You often see this on round tables in Chinese families or where there is a Chinese lauriat feast.
There are smaller versions, like the ones used for frosting a cake. And there’s another one that can be used for refrigerators. This eliminates reaching out at the back of the fridge because you just turn the lazy Susan around.
Use Liners on the Shelves
You could buy new plastic liners in rolls to use on refrigerator shelves. Or, to save money, you can just use old placemats. You could easily clean up spilled messes by wiping them off or just removing and washing the old liners from time to time in order to wash them. You need to do this to be able to remove bacteria from food that’s left on the shelves. This helps you keep the fridge clean easily.
Buy small trays
Those little plastic trays will help you organize the stuff in your fridge. Sometimes, we have little bottles with leftover sauces, condiments, and the like. We have a rectangular tray that we place on the side of the refrigerator so that they are together there. It’s easier to look for them this way and in case the contents get spilled, these are confined in that space alone.
Use a vacuum cleaner
Sometimes, little food debris can be hard to clean, especially if they are stuck in crevices. Attach a brush to your vacuum cleaner and let the powerful suction power clean the interior.
Binder Clips for Bottles
Those binder clips are not just for your documents. You can use them to stop bottles lying down on the shelves to keep them from rolling everywhere.
Things to Do
Meanwhile, here are things to do in order to keep the fridge clean and organized.
Use clear containers to store leftovers
Leftovers can often be forgotten in our fast-paced and very busy lifestyle. In order to remember that you have leftovers, check the refrigerator before preparing meals. Using clear containers will make this easier for you, as you don’t have to keep opening every container there is.
Do an inventory weekly
Check your refrigerator every week in order to throw away rotting vegetables and fruits. Or maybe you have some leftovers that are starting to spoil. This will clear up space in the fridge and not waste energy cooling useless items.
These are just simple things to do in order to keep your fridge clean and orderly. But if you keep doing it, you protect your family from harmful bacteria plus you get to save on electricity.
