It is my desire to have a simple but secure cottage on a big lot surrounded by fruit-bearing trees, vegetables, and ornamental plants. That way, it is a cool oasis in the city.

We will call it Lo Legacy Land because it will be our legacy to the environment and the next generation.

What do you think of when remodeling the home?

There are always numerous trade-offs to consider when building your own home.

Do you buy a property that is near a great public school but requires a lot of fixing? Or do you purchase a beautiful house but in a neighborhood that’s not very nice? Do you go with a home with just one bathroom because you are considering the family budget? Or do you get a unit with a least two toilets and baths, in case you will have more than one child?

Things to Consider when Remodeling the Home

All of these issues have to be considered when buying a home. But for many people, a house that needs some remodeling can be a good deal in the end. It can be financially wise — if you know what to do.

The Budget

Let’s face it. Money, the abundance or lack of it, will always be the major factor in making decisions.

When it comes to remodeling your new home, the budget is the biggest considering. Sometimes, we like to add a lot of things to make our new home more comfortable and beautiful. However, our pockets have a limit and our prudent self is telling us to reconsider.

With that said, the first thing to consider when remodeling the home is to peg the construction budget. Will the budget come from cash on hand or from a home renovation loan?

Home Design

We have different needs as well as ideas on how our dream home will look like.

Thankfully, we already have a lot of design inspirations about remodeling the home. There are magazines and online resources like Pinterest. Plus, we can have ideas from model homes or modules from suppliers.

The Contractor

When remodeling the home, it’s important to find a reputable and trustworthy general contractor to oversee the job.

If you are doing a bathroom redo, bathroom contractors will need to be consulted for estimates. The advice from contractors is critical, as they can help guide the planning, the actual work, and all the way until the construction is finished.

The experience and supplier contacts of a good contractor are invaluable. But the most important thing is, you have to find the right one.

One of the best ways to find a good contractor is through referral. Ask the friends who have experienced remodeling their own homes. Listen to their advice and testimony and then consider your options.

Finding Great Contractors

In the past, finding local contractors who can handle your remodeling job can be a bit complicated, especially if your immediate circle doesn’t have the experience as well.

But today the process has been made easier and faster because of internet technology. There are now many reputable websites with listings of good contractors per area. The search process has become more efficient.

Check out the examples of past projects, as well as photos and client reviews.

Once you have found someone who seems like a good fit, you can arrange a phone consultation. If everything sounds right and legit, set up a meeting at the contractor’s office to review the remodeling plans.

From this point on, you may already reach an agreement and sign a contract. Then the real work of transforming the property into your dream house can commence.
