Iloilo Chef Wins 1st Solane Kitchen Hero Region VI – Chefs’ Edition

The 1st Solane Kitchen Hero Region VI – Chefs’ Edition was successfully concluded last July 12. It was held at the 888 Chinatown Premier Mall in Bacolod. The grand winner is Chef Gil George Jucaban from Iloilo!

Solane Kitchen Hero Chefs’ Edition

Solane, the leading LPG solutions brand in the Philippines, launches its grandest culinary competition. Tagged Solane Kitchen Hero Chefs’ Edition, it’s the first-ever cooking competition that aims to discover the next big Pinoy chef.

To make sure that the competition taps everyone nationwide, this is a regional-to-national cooking tilt. From north to south, Solane Kitchen Hero travels around the country. It has a total of 16 regional stops. That way, they can open the doors and recognize a new generation of talented chefs.

“We believe that the Philippines has some of the best and most talented chefs in the world.” These are the words of Isla LPG Corp. CEO Ruben Domingo. “Through the Solane Kitchen Hero competition, we aim to recognize these chefs. They are vital in bringing Filipino cuisine to the world stage. At the same time, we are on a quest to explore and highlight Filipino specialties unique to our provinces.”

The Western Visayas (Region VI) competition was held in Bacolod City. Five professional chefs from Bacolod and Iloilo wrestled in their individual stations for an hour. Just for joining, they are already winners because participants each received P10,000.

There were pasta, pork, and chicken dishes presented. In the end, Chef Gil George Jucaban of Iloilo wowed the judges. He produced a flavorful plate of adobo flakes and poached egg on rice.

Chef Richard Ynayan, Chef Andre Gonzaga, and Josef Sagemuller were the judges for Solane Kitchen Hero Region VI leg . Additionally, Chef Nancy Reyes Lumen was present to oversee the competition.

It was a fun afternoon for everyone who attended. There were games and raffle prizes and a lot of people won! Even Chef Nancy didn’t mind being silly to join in the fun.

Mechanics of the Cook-Off

For this one-of-a-kind cook-off, participants must be Filipino professional chefs. They should have at least three (3) years of kitchen experience gained locally or abroad. Additionally, they must be currently employed as a professional chef in a hotel, restaurant, or food service establishment.

The competition will comprise of two (2) rounds. Round one will be the regional competition where contestants from different provinces will compete. The winner will represent their region in the national competition.

Round two will be the semi-finals and grand finals where all regional champions will compete. The grand winner be hailed the champion of Solane Kitchen Hero Chefs’ Edition.

Judges

The national competition will be judged by renowned Filipino celebrity chefs. These are Solane Kitchen Hero ambassador Chef Sau del Rosario and competition director and author Nancy Reyes-Lumen.

Criteria for Judging

  • 50% featured ingredients
  • 50% originality and creativity

The competition will conclude on September 7, 2019 at Eastwood City in Metro Manila.

Prizes at Stake

The grand prize winner of Solane Kitchen Hero Chefs’ Edition will take home P100,000. Moreover, he or she will embark on a culinary trip to Japan for two. The trip has customized stops at different food and drink destinations for more learning opportunities.

Meanwhile, Solane Kitchen Hero is made possible with the support of dynamic organizations and brands. STI serves as the official school partner while Midea is a co-presenter. Major sponsors are Masflex, Jolly, Jolly Heartmate Canola Oil, Dona Elena, and Dona Elena Al Dente. Furthermore, they have support from King Sue, Ajinomoto, Philtranco, Fastcat, Chef’s Garb, and National Bookstore.

Future Plans

In the coming years, Solane plans to make this an annual competition. There might be different categories for Solane Kitchen Hero, like students, mommies, and the like. That would be a good time to show off moms’ homecooking skills!
